problems with brand new dw008k

Post by newbie8881 »

Just bought a new dw008k laser lever, screwed it to the wall and set my tiles to it,slowly moved it to the side to get the level at other side of the room and noticed the level I set was out by the thickness of the lasel, probably 1.5-2mm or so. Is this normal for this to happen. Heads fried now after spending the money on it :(

yes my thoughts
the only way to check would be a water level ??
even water levels can be out if say one end is warmer than the other
2mm over say 12ft is not worth worrying about imho :dunno:

Hi,
Im guessing you actually mean the DW088K rather than the DW008K which is a recip saw

As said are you sure the floor is level?

How large is the room? the accuracy is ±0.3mm/m so over a 4m area it could be out by ±1.2mm

Regards

How are you marking the line? Are you marking using the top of the red line, or the bottom? If you are using either then you're doing it wrong. Laser levels have to be marked by putting your pencil marks dead centre in the middle of the red laser line. This is due to the nature of the optics used (in fact ALL optics, including reading glasses and camera lenses) the width of the laser line changes as it gets nearer or further from the laser level. At some distance from the laser the beams cross (the point of focus) and are at their thinnest and this normally around 4 metres or so with interior lasers - further away than that and the line will start to get thicker. Try it yourself - at 15 metres the line will be noticeably thicker than at 4 metres from the laser. I've had to teach this to pretty much everyone I've ever come across who's borrowed a laser level, other than the photographers who seem to get it straight off. I'm now on lasers no. 4 and 5 and I've never had issues with setting a level, even when zig-zagging across and up a 120ft dining hall I can get to within a few millimetres of where a dumpy level shows the level to be - good enough for construction work

This is how I do it. I screw the laser to the wall, mark the bottom and top of laser level line facing me then slowly move it to the side so I can get to the other side of the room but its still got a weak line where I first marked and its now moved slightly up. Wish I'd just spent the extra few quid on a bosh one now that gives a 360 degree level. First time using the dewalt and not happy!

Yes my mistake!

As for the level being out by 1.2mm every 4 meters, JESUS CHRIST! That's wild. So your telling me that my lines all around the room for tiling are off. The room is 3.8m x 3m

it will average out at the half [180 degree]circle point so it will go from zero to maximum then back to zero at start point
not quite sure what is worrying you really you wont notice a difference the thickness off a pencil lead or 3 or 4 credit card thicknesess :dunno:

remember it will be at one point within the spec at any one time so maybe at +0.2 for a period then maybe - 0.2 for a period after use
it will not fluctuate throught the arc in a wavy line but a strait line between high and low

That's if I swivel it evenly left and right and put it in the centre of the room. I can't do this because of where shower and bath is.
