Porcelain Tiles on to plasterboard

Hi all,

Will standard PB, which has been dot and dabbed, be strong enough to hold large porcelain tiles in a bathroom. The tiles are 600x300x10 mm. The tiles are going above and around bath and sink? Many thanks in advance for any help.

You are just about OK with that, but do use a good quality cement based adhesive (Mapei as an example) that states that it is suitable for porcelain.. should come in at about 28/29KG per square metre, max on plasterboard will be about 32 KG per square metre..

Is the plasterboard skimmed? This will reduce the weight of tile it will hold as well,bare plasterboard holds quite a bit more.

Good point. I'd assumed bare.....as the OP didn't mention a skim.

Thanks guys for your help, and sorry for my slackness in getting back to you. The PB isn't and won't be skimmed Steve, is it worth putting in a few mechanical fixings as well as dot and dabbing it? Spot on with the weight of the tiles too Wineo, very impressed!
