Well its that time again, a spring clean, new hardware and a re-shuffle seems overkill to some but this is what I use to do for a living

From the top down......

24 port patch
16 Port Netgear gigabit switch
Draytek Router
Synology 215j 2x3tb WD reds (Media)
Synology 215j 2x2tb WD reds (Backup)
Synology 115j 1x2tb WD re Yellow (Ip cameras)
Swan 4ch dvr what will be replaced by the above 115j
Buffalo Diskstation Currently 4 tb Master backup



Rest of the network

Temp Netgear powerline 1200 adapters feeding a 8 port Netgear gigabit switch for the front room
5 Port Netgear gigabit switch upstairs feeding a inkjet, Colour Laser and a Draytek AP
2 cat6 feeds, feeding the workshop's 16 port Netgear Gigabit (split lan and vlan)

Most of the house is hardwired the rest gets done as and when it gets redecorated (upgraded as needed)

All Switches are the fanless and are the Netgear Prosafe range

Plans for the future

Ip Cameras with a 8 port POE switch (keep the data off the main network)
Upgrade the wireless, 5ghz AC seems the way forward
Swap out the 16 port switch as its nearly full
Fibre backbone

its no different to the people perving over tools, it all has its uses

I have many interests not just computers and networking, to many tbh

technology is there to be embraced, I still work with my hands and work with wood and metal mill, drill and turning

I bet those powerline adapters bottleneck everything - relatively speaking of course.
I'd like to hear more about the security setup. What cameras/software you're using etc??

The synology NAS has its own App's it works very well indeed (0nly been playing with the camera at the mo), I have been looking at swan or axis Ip cameras I currently have 2 swann night owls (analogue) - of course there is always composite to IP convertors

As for the Nas its self 80-100 Mb/s transfers over wired 10-20% less over wifi N, the ds215j has wake on lan, remote shutdown and restart and usb 3.0, the DSM 5.1 software on the Nas is very easy to use and works out the box once the drives have been setup

One of the main selling points is the very low power usage - no more power hungry servers


The powerline adapters are fine, they are the new gigabit ones (dual frequency iirc) they work fine for streaming media, ping to the wdtv/youview/Freesat and other boxes is around 2ms max but i have yet to max them out with a transfer test

- flashI'm only joshing with you as there's no bigger geek than me when it comes to tech stuff - as a glimpse inside my workshop would reveal (electronics equipment, test sets, ham radio stuff and components wall-to-wall).

I only wish mine was as neat and tidy as yours.

I did my training in the tv/video trade what has all but died off these days - last tv I touch was for a young lady I know - Samsung 50" what her work had thrown out (18 months old), 6 quids worth of branded cap's to replace the won hung low cap's and its working fine

Im not a ham but a swl, I have my fair share of kit, last bit of kit I got was a duratool rework station
