Re: Windows 10 Loaded

Post by Retired »

Hi,

I mentioned to a chum this morning that I had been offered the free Win10 upgrade. My chum said be vary wary of a gift horse and being a guinea pig isn't always a good thing; let it ride a while before deciding because he also said he had seen adverse comments about security and that data was being collected and flogged off to the likes of Amazon? I can't confirm this but why would a money making company the size of Microsoft with shareholders to answer to actually give away an operating system like Win10 after spending a great deal of money developing it; it doesn't make sense so what's the catch; if it looks too good to be true it usually is? :dunno:

Kind regards, Col.

The main reason they want to give it away is the fact that vast numbers of people and companies are still running XP and while 7 was popular, very few picked up 8. It is causing microsoft lots of trouble to deal with older versions of windows and they really want to get everyone working on the same platform. By rolling it out as a free upgrade for those on 7/8 they are encouraging large numbers of people to move up to the latest version which will in turn make more incentive for those still using XP to also upgrade. Microsoft has basically said that windows 10 will be the "last" version of windows they create, from now on everything will be small incremental upgrades which are much easier to deal with.

Thanks for the link BG. Didn't take long at all.

First impressions good.

Sounds like the same issue as me. Kept failing and downloading each time for an unknown reason. That's how I found the download version - worked first time.

Now I've got my installation done, I can do a clean install without any issues on a new SSD when I finally get some time.

Winner!

I downloaded BG link and it loaded withough a hitch so far, had an AMD update for windows 10 so that was cool.

First impression, "a Lot faster"

What else happens I'll let you know.

Ps took less than an hour to download and install, but can see that taking a day at least if you down have super fast broadband.

Now to play and see if anything doesn't work.

Well I come across my first issue today after reinstalling a laptop - Symantec endpoint is not compatible with windows 10 and there is not fix for it.......... yet

one annoyance is shutdown/restart - after a quick search there is a shortcut key - go to the desktop and hit Alt + F4 that pops up a NT style shutdown/logout box - hit Enter

I downloaded and prepared the ISO file onto a DVD, not done the update yet as I need to do some more backing up and get my second computer running in case I have any problems.

Oh I am sure there will be some charges at some point, though from what I gather the plan is to keep the basic OS free and charge for extras or for those needing bigger systems such as companies. Of course if you buy a new laptop etc then part of that cost will be going to microsoft, and if you don't already have 7/8/8.1 or you want a clean copy then you have to pay, so it isn't all free.

This has got "all your eggs in one basket all over it"

None, as I read it of the anti-virus software will work and you have to uninstall them, one wonders what else is heading that way, giving MS control over virtually the whole internet, you will use our software or what ?

Most annoying to date is you shut the damn thing down and it turns itself back on, Oh and it removed my clock from the screen.

Anyone know how you get it to shut down and stay shut down till you tell it otherwise.

Not had any issues with the shut down, as yet!

Kaspersky wouldn't work, but they have a new version on their site, in support, for Win 10.

Just trying to get used to finding where everything is is the main PITA at present.

A personal annoyance is that all your programs are called 'apps'. That winds me up so much, I wish I hadn't even typed it on here now! :cussing:

its all to easy to stick in sleep mode rather than shutdown, The Alt + F4 on the desktop gives you 2 options shutdown or restart

It maybe worth a look in Device Manager and making sure there are no driver issues

Has anyone here bothered to read the 45 pages of user terms and privacy statement about WIn10 yet ? Hmmmm I'm now debating whether to install it or not, or just stick with Win7.

That's one thing I'm concerned about. The fact that Microsoft can actually read private emails, or (even worse) personal stuff kept in private folders. In other words, they could access my bank account, CV, all the stuff on my computer. Who's to say Microsoft don't have any dodgy employees, willing to sell personal data on? Do you trust them completely?
