Robots!
Can a robot do your job?
According to the link below there's a 72% likelihood that a robot could replace a Chippy.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-34066941
I wouldn't mind betting that whoever decided that (or input the info for a decision to be made) has never done a days work on a site in their life - it's absolute bolleaux.
I'd bet their robot couldn't even get my toolbag upstairs, let alone get my chopsaw up a ladder onto a scaffold. If you really think about it, the list of things that a robot would struggle with as a chippy is almost endless.
I can see that on an assembly line it might work, but never on site, it's just not going to happen.

One day it will all be firewood.

On new builds, perhaps assembled in a factory, then maybe yes. On crappy old, worn-out Victorian buildings with 150 years of extensions, short cuts, lack of proper maintenance and bodge work, absolutely no chance........

Re: Robots!
I watched a forecasting documentary the other day..
It was about computers becoming self aware, dropping the bomb on humans as it saw them as a threat, then the last scraps of humanity (called the resistance led by a guy called John) were hunted down by robots the computers made. Even sent a few of the robots back in time to get Johns mum!!! Kin scary stuff lads
I've got my suspicions that mod2 might be part of this futuristic conspiracy

Re: Robots!
Or could a robot for some jobs be like a sort of "mate"? Carry the tools and materials and do simple jobs it's told to do. "Hold this here" "Cut this to x length" etc.

I suppose that at the very least they wouldn't be playing with their phone all day like the youngsters who usually perform those duties.Dave54 wrote:Or could a robot for some jobs be like a sort of "mate"? I would like to program the building site version robot. I would take great delight in fitting a wolf whistle unit and installing set speech bites like 'Show us your tits love' and 'you stuck up bitch' and other cheeky chappy comments that would be appreciated by passing females.

Hopefully it could also make a decent cup of tea - another thing apprentices can't do any more (because they don't drink tea?)ayjay wrote:I suppose that at the very least they wouldn't be playing with their phone all day like the youngsters who usually perform those duties.Dave54 wrote:Or could a robot for some jobs be like a sort of "mate"? I repair robots.
...they 'could' replace me (I suppose) but I could also make them have a 'very bad day' if they tried.

Don't take it personally......
