Recommend me a printer

Noticed that a pair of ink cartridges for my old HP deskjet printer cost the same (£33) as a brand new HP deskjet printer!
So I'm going to get a new printer. Doesn't need to be photo quality, and would be nice to have a scanner built in.
Any recommendations?

A minefield of options!

I've just purchased a second hand laser printer with cartridges that are 60% full and have a rated output of 11,000 pages when actually full. Paid £75 for it. Works out at 0.7p per page if the cartridges were full but just over 1p per page at the level they are currently at. And that's if I throw it away when it gets empty!

Even if I paid 5p per page it would be significantly cheaper than most 'new' printers could manage these days.

For low usage it would probably be cheaper to find some of those 'end of line' printers you see in Tesco now and again and buying half a dozen then flogging them on when empty.

Cheap unit and it works well. I will refill the black cartridge and buy the colour one. Still going on original carts as I do not print that much.

My Epson is awful, everytime you switch it on and you use 10-15% of the ink from every cartridge with the start procedure.

Are they all this bad? Because it costs a lot of money and is really annoying - I have 6 cartridges and 50% of the time I switch on I have to replace one of them.

I am amazed to see a cheap laser printer (1000pgs per cartridge) is only £36 - so I guess I'll get one for letters. And have a file for photos which I'll print out once in a blue moon on the epson.

I think we've had this discussion before. The printers are actually remarkable devices for the price you pay and the manufacturers HAVE to recouperate their costs somewhere so they subsidise the hardware cost through the ink cost.

This wasn't so much an issue in the early days of printing as they were quite expensive (you paid a higher proportion of the hardware costs and a lower cost for ink) but 'finances' dictate policy nowadays and churning out new models with non-compatible previous cartridges is the norm

This is why we've gone back to the older (ex business) machines as they are far more robust, have longer life expectancies, larger ink cartridges and replaceable parts. The costs per page are ridiculously low in comparison to 'new' printers. We have an old Kyocera for mono printing (cost me £5, cartridges are £15 and last 11,000 pages) and recently bought a HP4205 colour laser for £75 - new price is £900 .

The Kyocera has been running daily for over 5 years now - never failed. I have high(er) hopes for the HP4025, it being a VERY robust ex-business machine weighing in at 45kg!!! One plus side (for me) is that full techincal manuals are available for these devices so repairing them is very easy.

All said, people with much less demand for printing should just accept a 'cost-per-page' attitude and budget accordingly.

I had a Canon printer all singing and dancing even had a fax. After a couple of years useless (cost just unde £200). Got rid of it over the tip and have had an HP 5510 since. Great printer for wireless (I-pad etc and for laptops). Bought some cheap ink from e-bay (hopeless) went back to using original cartridges.

I was given an Epson SX 410 all in one last year. Don't use it much, but just bought a re-furbished computer (running Win7 with the optional upgrade to Win10) Bloody trouble I had trying to find the correct drivers so it will scan anything. Grrrrr, Eventually found one.. As others have already said, the almost prohibitive cost of ink cartridges, means I'll be looking for a new printer once these cartridges have ran out. Photo's I can have printed online or at many of the photography counters these days.

You cant go far wrong with HP - common printer in most industries

Laserjet 2100 full colour laser with 6 toners

shop around for ink, genuine cartridges can be found for 40% less then rrp, but always ask/check the dates on them

warrantees are only valid if you are using genuine ink - beware of after market cartridges as these can use water based inks if not use regularly they do dry out, and those printers with remote print heads (Kodak, Epson and cannon) the ink drys in the pipe work and fowls the heads

Hi,

I bought a new all in one Epson a while back and the best thing that it did was to explode into millions of pieces as threw it with some force into the recycling skip.

I then bought an all in one Canon MG6250 which I still have and rate the same as the Epson. The Canon is sitting on the floor in our spare bedroom because I'm sick of it.

Both these printers ate ink cartridges the same way a Lancashire boiler eats coal. I got fed up of installing a new cartridge then after printing a page finding the cartridge down to 66% full so another two pages must empty them? I've only kept the Canon because of the scanner which I might need to use at some time other than that I've had it with colour all in one printers; just looking at and holding one of the cartridges I bet a pen re-fill holds more ink?

I'll stick with my old HP Laserjet P1102w which is still on its original toner cartridge but then I do little printing; you need to be rich to run a colour printer.

The biggest pile of sh*t I had was a Kodak. I was seduced by the cheap cartridges that were a con. They lasted for vey few pages and had a code strip that prevented refills. It went the way of the exploding sledgehammer as I punished it severely for its shortcomings.
