It's a good enough machine that will do what you need, I've just got my parents a similar model.

Would be nicer with 8GB though.

Lenovo have been around for years they use to build IBM machines ie. ibm thinkpad

on there budget machines the edges can be a bit sharp but soon soften with use, no issues apart from that, easy to upgrade if needed at a later date

if your on a real tight budget the do a Celeron for £170

edit. memory upgrade would be £30-40 (crucial, Kingston or corsair) for 8Gb but the B50-80 can handle 16gb

HP arn't what they use to be tbh, from a upgrade/service POV you have to take them apart to do anything with them, lately the quality of the keyboards has dropped (lettering coming off in months, sticking keys)

The i3/i5 Lenovo is great for the money and well built

I can't stand HP and the stupid touchpads they use any more either. I can't remember the last time I didn't have to plug a mouse in to use one - it's like I'm dead to them or something!!!!

Surprised to hear that ... Mine has been faultless (about a year old)

as has my next door neighbours

(Hardware wise anyway, can't say the same for the viruses etc. he's had.. can't blame HP for that though...)

You didn't say that at the start, so I guess 4GB will be fine. Like Flash said, you can always upgrade. I'm always of the thought that if you get something nicer at the start, it'll be treated better - kids don't like waiting for things.

Also, with the kids I have seen using computers, it's likely to be used for minecraft and all sorts of other things - the memory would make it all smoother.

Was just a suggestion.

If there is no rush, I'd wait if it is for Crimble.

Not only will the 10 laptops be on the shelves, you'll also be getting the Christmas "deals" too. That, or you will pick up some cracking Windows 8.1 machines cheap.

most off the shelf machines are win 10 from the factory, win 10 upgrade on most notebooks aren't a issue, Its the desktops that have the issues due to the untold permutations of hardware

As I said above £30-40 for 8gb of decent branded memory, prices do change form week to week tho

Most are still selling 8.1 with a free w10 upgrade, assume you have to do that yourself.

May hold off for a while and see what comes on the market, don't need them till Christmas

On launch there were not that many machines that were released with 10 surprisingly. There were blocking issues with the ADK (the deployment toolkit) for the OEM's that caused a fair amount of problems for RTM and producing images - there have been substantial changes to the way recovery is implemented and the associated tools.

Lots of machines are still 8.1 (in the retail space) with free upgrades (in the first year), while newer machines are 10.

Have a look on pcworld.co.uk for example and search for laptops - 127 "Windows" laptops and only 10 that filter down with the Windows 10 option selected natively.
