Re-tiling bathroom wall

Post by Markt »

I am just about to redo my bathroom after 24 years.

I have removed the tiles from around the bath, the 2 short walls are skimmed plasterboard and the long wall is a plastered wall. The original tiles came off cleanly and there is no damage to the walls even on the plasterboard walls. Where there was paint left on the plaster I have scraped it off with a glass scraper and am left with perfectly smooth plaster.

I am going to re-tile with ceramic 330mm x 250mm tiles, how should I prepare the bare plaster, should I just give it a couple of coats of paint to reseal it or should I use something like the Mapei Plaster Primer that Screwfix sell?

Any advice would be gratefully received

Tiling primer such as Mapei is the best choice

Thanks Darren

If I just seal the plaster is it more likely that I will damage the walls next time I remove the tiles?

If you mean seal the plaster with paint then no, but be aware that the strength of the bond will be entirely dependent on the adhesion of the paint and so the tiles are more likely to fall off.
