Intermittent slowness

The EE brightbox is all in one box.

Phoneline, never had an issue really, perhaps a tiny bit of constant background noise.

Plugged into the single master socket is the supplied filter, with two connections to that. One to a phone, and the other to the DSL socket on the modem. No other extensions/phones plugged into the system

Socket is a single, where the top part stays and the bottom unscrews.

That confused the chuff out of me - I didn't realise Mr Gas had posted....

If you've got constant background noise on the line and it's not the phone (cordless or wired), you need to raise a VOICE fault with your line.

If your voice provided by EE as well as broadband?

When you call up, don't mention the broadband issues - just the noise on the line.

You can do what's called a "quiet line test" by dialling 17070 - it should be crystal clear and no buzz, etc.

The line has to be perfect for your broadband really. Buzzing can cause re-sync's, dropouts, errors, slower speeds, retransmissions, etc. DLM will see this too and reduce your speed or do things to compensate, all bad for you. It's possible that's what is keeping your line running, but at a reduced wait.

The pauses might be dropouts while the connection is established each time.

Yep. That does work on a BT line.
It speaks your phone number then offers a bunch of options, one of them being quiet line test,..............the line goes.......quiet.

Get a cheap 5 quid wired phone to rule out the wireless aspect. It's a good chuck in the cupboard thing to have.

To test....

- unplug all the stuff except the phone
- quiet line test (using number again, option 2)

If it's a Mk2 or MK 3 faceplate, you can also undo the front two screws and get straight to the test socket - plug phone directly into there. Might be hidden wiring to other sockets you dont' know about - they *should* be under there, if any.

If it still makes noise, report a VOICE (sorry to keep emphasising that) fault with EE and ham up the noise.

That confused me - I thought it was Hitch who posted about the rebooting. He has noise on the line, so the last post was for him.

Same advice/questions for you though! The modem shouldn't need restarting. It bad to do so as well for the reasons above.

Check the line for noise, etc,etc.

Router is fine to restart, but not modem. If you are, there are issues.....

I couldn't hear anything.

Just done a speed test. 62 down, 19 up.

Slightly slower than it used to be.

What is the ping time on your speed tests?

What is your wiring setup? What comes in, is the modem in the master socket? Any extensions, phones, etc?

Got some pictures of the setup?

Also, what model/revision of modem do you have - oddly, this could be quite important!

Finally, what are your predicted speeds - you can check here for good/impacted speeds:

The ping on those tests was 9ms.

BT modem goes straight into the latest revision of the BT master socket.

When it was first installed I was getting 70/72 mbps download.

The more I fiddle around, the more it only seems to go slow using chrome.
