Floor tiling around bath

Post by louisbean »

Just prepping to do our bathroom floor.

We have a heavy cast iron bath (see attached) which couldn't be raised up for the tiles to go underneath it (don't ask!).

So I guess the tiles have to go around. I've found a stone mason who can cut the two curves I need in the tiles. However should I be going right up to the bath with the tiles or leave a little gap, and if so what should I fill it with? Grout? In some cases I'll have no choice as the side of the bath isn't entirely straight.

The tiles are 15mm thick encaustic (ceramic) so very chunky.

Oh btw I'm using cement backer board under the tiles.

Personally I'd leave a 2mm gap around and then silicone it

Great, thanks. I can definitely do that. Can I ask why that's a good idea? I guess one thing is incase there's a bit of movement or expansion on the bath the silicone gives a bit of flexibility?

Another quick qu - I have some latex primer, anyone know whether this needs drying time? It doesn't say anything about it on the instructions .

I have to say I'm pretty chuffed with the final result never having done any tiling before - I found the main problem keeping the adhesive under control - it just gets everywhere!

The tiles still need sealing obvs.

Thanks all! I'm getting there slowly with this whole DIY lark, and this forum's been really helpful. Now to get this shower rail up - funny how the simplest looking stuff can be the biggest pain sometimes!
