Any tips before I go Win10

Hi chaps,

So Chrome is giving me hassle about not being supported anymore for Vista, so looks like I'm having to go all out on Windows 10. I've done the check and all seems good.

Anything I should know before I commit? I can't back up my laptop because my CD writer has had enough. What will happen to all my balloon fetish stuff? What will happen to my 'how to be a gigalo' files? Will nasa be able to see my moon?

I upgraded to W10 when it was first released and apart from a couple of niggles (Navigation; Cortana is a bitch but has been disabled as has "Bing"... a few issues with "What closing the lid" on the laptop does...

Overall better than anything since XP..

I downlaoded win 10 for the mrs over the week end, it had the odd hicup, like wanting to restart before it would install, but no, nothing to worry about.

I'm the same as Wes, Vista Home Basic does everything I want but getting these popups from Chrome, the "Learn More" button tells me bu$$er all.

Bear in Mind I'm a technonumpty - does this mean that Vista won't work with Chrome or does it mean that Microsoft won't be sending updates, like it did with XP - and if so, when?

I'm pretty sure my 12 year old Toshiba Satellite with 2Mb RAM won't cope with Windows 10 and not keen to upgrade unless I really have to.

Vista isn't a supported FREE upgrade path to Windows 10 - oops.

Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 qualify during the free upgrade period.

You can get a cheap Windows 7 / 8.1 pack and install 10 then.......if you know someone who has a brand spanking new Windows 8.1 pack laying around that one might purchase in a shop, none of that hooky rubbish (nudge nudge wink wink) doing nothing, you might want to ask them.......then, I'd download the installation package for Windows 10 and have it. You can enter the 8.1 product key when you go to activate.

Ooopps I'd assumed that Wes was buying a new machine with W10; not trying to upgrade from vista to W10..

BTW Wes your fetish stuff can be shoved on to a memory stick.. or several memory sticks if you have an extensive collection..

@aardvark; as I understand it chrome will still work with Vista, it's the security updates that are the problem, leaving your 'puter vulnerable to viruses etc.

If you have decent Anti-virus software and anti-malware installed then may not be worth the expense of upgrading just yet.. but Windows will be ending support for Vista sometime (BG will probably know when).. so it may be worthwhile upgrading sooner rather than later

I've had windows 10 installed with a windows 7 shell installed. It hasn't missed a beat. Cortana is pish but as someone said easy to deactivate.

I'm still running Win7. I tried installing Win10 twice; the first time I was shut out of my computer because it no longer accepted my password so there was nothing else I could do; I wiped the lot and re-installed Win7. I hadn't realized Win10 had disabled the number lock and as my password has numbers the password was rejected; I've never had to enable numbers lock previously so really got caught out; the second time I had lots of little problems which annoyed me so once again I re-installed my trusty Win7. Given my limited demands of my computer Win7 works well for me; eventually I'll have to upgrade to Win10 but by the time I do upgrade it might be onto Win15 because anything six months old in computer terms seems obsolete? I'm no computer geek but I usually manage on a need to know basis and can install a clean operating system.

I recently read an article that pretty much made sense. To basically sum the article up, it said that if you're running Vista, it means the hardware is pretty dated, and for the cost of Win10 (providing you don't go down Billy's dodgy route ), you may as well pay a little extra and update the lot. In other words, buy a new pc with current hardware and IOS.

Considering this, I think the best thing to do is get as much life as I can out of my Vista machine until it's had enough and then buy a new machine. Of course from now, I think it'll be best to start saving my ballon fetish stuff to an external storage device

If it's "Vista Ready" then it's more than adequate for 7 (memory permitting). If it runs 7, then 10 *should* be as good if not better.

Obvious exception is if the drivers don't exist.

Vista is sh*t.

Edit.....my method of upgrade isn't dodgy! It's legit, as you would have the full 8.1 pro set - COA, discs and pack. All new, all unused. So there.

Iknow I'm going to have to upgrade at some stage - probably when my laptop shuffles its mortal but happy with what I have at the moment.

Easy way to back up your files is to "store" them in the cloud. There's a zillion companies offering free online storage.... Win 10 though?? only thing I would say about it (having gone through the Win7 to 10 upgrade route) is, once you've upgraded, then do a fresh install of Win10 before downloading your personal stuff back on to your computer. There's lots of tutorials online for a fresh install of Win10 once you've upgraded.
