I've been looking at second hand block planes SJ. But I'm undecided which one would be best for general use, skirtings/facings etc. Can you give me your recommendation for a Stanley or Record & what number?
Cheers mate.... :thumbright:
Here is the same one I use, great for dressing mitres on facings and skirting and nice for chamfering material as well. I bought mine of fleabay several years ago for around 25 quid and it came with the origional blade which holds an edge nicely and has lasted me well.
Thanks SJ that'll do me...... :thumbright:

Well it arrived, not as bad to look at as I was scared of, a very rough casting and thin blade but square and smooth. Not going to send it back as loss of double postage is half the cost and certainly won't get better for the price. No opportunity to try it yet, will report when I am next facing all the jobs I have to do.

Sitting at £36 now with ten mins to go. Is it worth that?

Went for total of £46.80. Thought that was a bit high.

Stevie is this a similar plane to the record one you posted?

I'd have thought that £35 was nearer the mark, but I'm well out of touch really, and you have collectors as well as users wanting them. One problem with not being able to properly inspect the plane before parting with money, is that if it's had some use, the blade may be worn back to past the hardened part, if it's that type of blade. One I have didn't last that long after buying secondhand. Luckily I had a spare blade that fit from a scrap plane I'd acquired. You can get spare blades I think, but they're pricey.
