Ceramic Tiles to line fireplace for wood burning stove

Post by Ed2909 »

Hello

I am in the process of having a wood burning stove professionally installed. Before I discuss the lining option with the installers, could someone confirm whether I can use ceramic tiles to line the back and sides of the fireplace (not the hearth / floor)?

The property is a Victorian terrace and I have some Victorian mosaic floor / wall style ceramic tiles left over from doing the bathroom floor that I think they would look nice as the lining for the fireplace.

Whilst they are already sealed, is there an additional sealant that could be painted onto them to provide further protection against staining?

Many thanks

Any advice or has anyone else actually done this already (installed ceramic tiles in the fireplace)?

I used porcelain tiles however provided your stove has the required clearances around all sides the ceramic tiles won't suffer from radiant heat issues.

Similarly the tiles shouldn't come to any grief if the stove is used properly as soot is meant to go up the chimbley! Dust from ash is your greatest problem but unless the tiles have contours/crevices again this is a non issue and I wouldn't bother with sealing them.

The last time I heard that way of saying the word was 20 years ago from a chimbley sweep from Bingley (West Yorks) :-)
