Why lights can work at same time?

Post by ling »

Hello all, i am new and Chinese and have worked in the country two years already. i am a computer artwork operator.

what my problem is that:

I have two lamps and two switches in my kitchen. the previous lamps were GU10s, 4 a group. I have changed the two group GU10s to two energy saver lamps.

Option 1: when i turn on switches (any switch), only one light was lighting. sometimes A was lighting, sometimes it was the others.

Option 2: i change these two energy saver lights to normal 100w tungsten lamps. they can work at same time but they were not really bright, just like 20w lamps.

someone told me that a transformer maybe is on the circle but i can find it.

Can someone give me advise please?

PS: the two switches work and can control these lamps.
but only 3 core and earth cable and twins cable are connecting into ceiling roses. I am not sure if connecting cause trouble.

Many thanks.

Have you got the old - orginal - lights still? If so, check on there to see if it has a voltage written in the lamp or fitting anywhere.
It sounds to me that you had a low-voltage fitting, which uses a transformer to change from the UK 240V down to 12V - these transformers are often just pushed up through the hole where the cables come out and are not very obvious.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?"
She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Hi Ling,

welcome to the forum.

It does sound like it could be a problem with the incorrect voltage and lamp like Hoovie says.

Your diagrams are excellent :thumbright:

Do you have a multi meter?
