How about, when it has a battery in it, you put your finger in between the prongs and it measures your pulse/heart rate?

That's far too sensible a suggestion to be any fun.

And only any good if your heartbeat is below 99 BPM... as there are only 2 digits......

You can't give up now.

Are there any markings on it, maybe a CE mark, patent No. or Regd. Design?

Can you find a man to undo that tiny screw for you.

Will ignore the "find a man" comment!
Why should I when I have all the expertise of this D.I.Y Forum at my disposal !!
You have sorted me out many times, from mending my wardrobe door to tracking down a nasty fridge /freezer smell!!!
re the gadget my theory is ,if it isn't easy to take it apart, I am not meant to!
I have taken a photo of the back and also rubbed some dark chalk on what faint markings that there are.
These markings are very difficult to make out by just looking at it normally.
.The only writing is "Produced in China" and reset on the front.
Are we any nearer?

Well we can add that it has a 'sounder' judging by the aperture on the back.

One part of the image warns against over tightening the screw on the battery compartment. I think the other one is the universal one for 'don't dispose of in bin' (is it a wheelie bin?)

I think kellys_eye is on the money with post #20.
Does pushing on the lug to touch the wires together result in a count? ...and a noise?
The back holes suggest a speaker.
If so, the combination of the two suggests speed (noise) and accuracy of count (counter) are both important. Speed suggests non-domestic use, where time is money/more important.
It may measure the depth from the tips of two plastic ends to the lug when wires are touching, of non-conductive items of slightly variable width less than the two inner wires. As the wires seem flexible (for them to touch), the width (as I've called it) seems non-critical, not important and unlikely to occur as putting something fatter in may damage the shape of the wires, which may in turn impact on the depth measurement.

The wires are pretty rigid ,so what would make it make a noise, I just don't know.
You are probably right though.
However, it doesn't look like something that I would ever find a use for!
Its partner (they had two ) is still in the Age UK shop.
I think I will just re-unite them!

Awwww..... send it to me. I'll refund all costs and do a pictorial dismantling of it to get to the bottom of it. Then I'll donate it to our local charity shop just to confuse other customers!

BTW the holes in the bottom are where the sound exits from - it's a piezo electric sounder to be 'technical'.

Interesting that you say there were two in the shop. I wonder if they were a pair. . .
Did the other one have a counter?
Be interesting to see what k-e finds.
