Everything is "bad" for you these days.
I wonder which is worse, vegetable oil of some kind which isn't changed often enough, or lard.
Greasy chips are caused by them not having the fat/oil hot enough. I don't have "shop bought" that often, but if they're greasy they only get one visit off me.

Always known as batter bits here too. Worked in Bilston a while ago and the chip shops there nearly all seem to sell battered chips. One chip shop near me has started selling them now and really nice they are too.

I can testify to that. I remember asking for a battered pizza when I was in a chippy in England and the woman serving just laughed and thought I was joking.

I've seen pizzas being battered and fried when I've been up there. Not tried one although a friend introduced me to fried cheese. Small cubes of cheese in a white wine batter and shallow fried , rich but very nice. I've seen the mars bars fried too , but never tried one. Another friend has and her reaction was that it was surprisingly good , almost embarrassingly good. 'Course you could go the whole hog and just batter and deep fry butter,

I recall someone telling me once that mushy peas were the rpduct of a cottage industry set up in old peoples homes. The pensioners would take their false teeth out and gum the whole peas into the mushy peas that were then sold up north. I have never been able to think of anything else whenever I see them.

I'm originally from the Midlands, so it's 'bits' for me. When we were kids, we'd show up at the chippy before closing and ask for a bag of bits. They were sublime back then.
