Have had one of the above for about 5 years and it's worked fine.
Went to use it for the first time this year and guess what ?
Starts on choke and ticks over fine, if a little white smokey, but a soon as you touch the
throttle and the choke disengages, the engine races for a couple of seconds and then cuts out.
Manually disengaging the choke without touching the throttle gives the same result.
Any ideas anyone ?

Sounds like fuel starvation.
First off change the fuel if you haven't already. Secondly is the fuel filter or the tube to the carb blocked?
Otherwise it's take the carb apart carefully, clean with carb cleaner and blow jets and fuel ways out with compressed air. be careful not to blow any jets or other small parts out.
