Tree trimming waste removal - advice?

Hi there,

I cut down a bunch of large conifers today. I've kept the logs for my fire, but i now how a massive pile of conifer branches. (3 large tree's worth, it's a lot!)

How am I best getting rid of this lot?

I thought about hiring a large skip, but I also thought about renting a machine to chew them all up into something more manageable, bag them up, then maybe I can get them to the local recycling plant with several trips in the car. (could take a while!)

Maybe I can just hire somebody to sort it out? I don't really have a clue what I should expect to even pay for this kind of service, if it exists.

Shredding is the way - it is great for covering beddings and might prove popular with local gardeners if you simply advertised 'free to uplift' - but you'd have to shred it first of course.

You could chance asking for money for it - £1/bag wouldn't go amiss, depends on how desperate you are to get shot of it?

Leylandii?
Rather like Russian Vine they seem a great idea at the time and for the first two or three years ..... then.
I often get neighbours asking me to fell and dispose of Leylandii which have outgrown their welcome. They promise me that I can have the logs as a 'bonus' - not that I ever charge anyway.
My response is :

Too much tree, and not enough wood

I have a Honda driven shredder.
Feeding leafless small diameter branches in is just about worthwhile for the mulch when it's cooled down.
Feeding in conifer 'waste' is a pain and a chore which I avoid.
If you can get a local contractor with one of those huge chompers - go for it. You might have to pay a little extra 'coz they won't have the logs to 'compensate'.

Conifer mulch is bad for bedding plants, it is great for supressing weed growth, I've used it under wooden decks before but, it should be considered a fire risk as there is a lot of resin in the mulch.

I reckon a decent hired chipper is the way to go, shredding means cutting the waste into smaller pieces but chipping will be less likely to jam up the machine.

You have to be careful dealing with this waste responsibly. You could hire someone to take it away and it will end up dumped in the country lanes. A chipper would make short work of it and it would reduce the bulk (but it would weigh the same) to allow you to take it in batches to your local recycling centre.

It is worth checking with a proper tree surgeon, someone based at a proper business address, for a price to do it for you. I understand that the shredded green waste goes to power generating plants that burn the mulch.

Looks like the best thing to do is hire one of these shredders from HSS:

£75 for the day. I reckon my brother and I can get it all done in a day.
