floorboard problem
Post by sallybgood »
Hi
I have a problem with the floorboards in my upstairs landing. Over the last few
months, I've notice gaps appearing between the floorboards, in some cases the gap is
at least 1 cm. Also, In one part of the landing, the floorboards seem to bulge up!
Can anyone suggest what might be causing this?
Regards

Hi
I have attached some pics. The underlay seems to be falling apart and the floorboards do seem to be discoloured although not damp.

Thanks for posting the pictures
Those boards look to me like they have been lifted at some point, perhaps to run cables or pipes underneath.
I think that you have only just noticed them now, perhaps because the carpet has worn, but they have probably been like that for a long time!

I agree with UHM and it's not out of the ordernary to find old underlay in that condition sometimes caused by the chemicals used by carpet cleaners

Hi
Thank you for your replies. In pic DSC00389.JPG, one of the floorboards is shown almost side on. You can see that this floorboard has a split running through it horizontally and I think this is what is giving it a humped appearance. I'm a bit concerned about it, so if I wanted someone to check it out should I call a builder, surveyor / damp specialist or someone else?

It looks like that is near the joist as you can see the screw head and so perhaps the wood was warped slightly and the screw could of popped out.
Ideally it would be good if you could ask a friend in the know to take a look at, but if you don't know anyone then I would start by asking a joiner to come and take a look.
