Going from grass to a lawn?

Our garden grass is a patchy and thin. I'm looking to get it looking like a thick green lawn.

Now I've tried various autumn feeds, spring feeds, weed and feed, 3 in 1 etc however non of these really seem to do a great deal.

Can anyone suggest a process and products on how to improve the quality of my lawn

Have you used the various feeds using a dropfeed spreader, if not, thats what you've been doing wrong

How often do you water you're lawn and how often do you cut your lawn

You can't just put down some feed by hand and expect it to do it all itself

I use one of those bottle things with the spreader on it that comes with evergreen.

Follow the instructions with regards to mowing and watering.

Cutting the lawn is usually done once a week in the summer months, although it depends on the growth.

Watering is done mostly every day in the evening

Over years a lawn will become compacted and it will prevent water and nutrients getting to the roots of the grass to promote growth. Another issue is grass clippings left to mulch which will form a thatch also preventing water getting through.

You need to aerate the surface and you can do this laboriously with a garden fork or hire a machine. Essentially you are creating holes that water can get in and soften up the under surface. Have a look on Youtube for 'aerating a lawn' as this will give you a better idea.

I have been using them for almost ten years now. I was first tempted when their quote for my three very large lawns was less than I had paid B&Q for weed and feed the previous year.
These guys have all the professional gear in back-pack sprayers, and push-around fertiliser applicators. Price is worked out on the area of lawn. I have three treatments a year; spring - mid season - autumn and I havn't seen a weed in my laws for ten years!
Believe me, I am a Yorkshire-man and I don't part with brass easily!

PS: I am so chuffed with the finish we get with our Suffolk Punch 17" petrol mower, that about 6 years back I made a 9 hole putting green by letting short lengths of 4" soil pipe into the lawns and making the little numbered flags etc. I'm proud as punch when the grand-kids come round and are asking to play golf.
