My oh has suggested that he could make some double gates for the drive to give us some privacy. They'd have to be no higher than 2m when installed.
I found a site with free plans and wondered if someone 'who knows' could tell me whether it's a good plan/ style or not?
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Louise

Its a standard design, the diagnal brace is there to stop the shape from dropping out of square, and hold its self up.
to be made properly this frame really needs to be jointed (mortice n tennon) and doweling used through the joints, for strength.
tbh depending on the width of the opening you want to span, it may be better and possibly cheaper in the end to buy steel gates and back them with marine ply for privacy.
its worth looking into all options, as cost, time effort all add up.
and Ultimatly at least you know they wont fall apart.

I just thought that it looked simple, sturdy and served a purpose. The span is about 8' so the gates aren't massive.
I wanted timber gates because I have a Parson Russell terrier and I don't want him to be able to see out of the gates, escape or jump over them. I have metal gates at the moment but I hate them that's why sturdy wooden gates seem to be a good option.

Understand what your saying,
The design is strong if constructed in the the correct way, clean square shoulders, tight fitting joints which are dowelled under presure by use of drawbars or cramps. for drilling the dowel holes and fitting them through the side of the Joints as a mechanical fixing locking the joint.
the Diagnal brace is ment to be a joint in its own right so it's locked into place.
Tall Gates usually have a top rail, middle rail and a bottom rail. with Diagnal bracw between each level offering more stability within the large area.
My advise would be to look at pictures of wooden gates and you will see the construction techniques if you look carfully.
You will find most are done the same way and the panels are either fixed to the front or within the frame its self.
good luck in what evere you decide to do.
