Sub-Floor

Post by disinfo »

Hello All,

Great forum.

Was planning on putting down some engineered wood flooring in our main bedrooom this weekend, have done this in two other rooms so far and found the subfloor to be constructed of 18mm plywood.

However, on pulling the carpet up last night, i found that our master bedrooms subfloor is just standard chipboard (not even the green stuff, and not T&G) The floor does seem to be pretty solid, I have no idea when the floor was put down as we only bought the house a year ago, the carpet did look fairly new though.

Can anybody advise me of whether this chipboard will be sufficient? Or should i be looking at repacing the subfloor with plywood (not budgeted for)

P.S the boards all seem to be 4x2's and are screwed into the joists with 3 screws per board per joist.

Hi Matthew,

I can't see a problem with fitting the new floor ontop of the chipboard that is already there.

I take it you will be gluing the pieces together and will fit them as a floating floor, rather than gluing the new floor to the existing floor?

Our Quick step floor was laid on top of the existing chipboard, no problems.
If laying in a kitchen use moisture resistant.

Thanks,

Think i'll just crack on with it this weekend and lay over the chip.
