Hi Have a 2009 Kia Carens. This has been cutting out when driving and the battery has been going flat. The garage said that the fault showed in the crank shaft sensor, so they replaced this. However, several days later, it wouldn't start. Took out battery which was about half full - so charged it and started again. Then, started cutting out when driving again, as well as having intermittent low battery charge. We bought a new battery just in case but same happening with new battery. Garage (diesel specialist) are at a loss as they say it is now saying that the crank shaft sensor is faulty but that doesn't explain the battery issue and the fact that the crank shaft sensor is new. Now saying only thing they can think it may be is the CPU...however they think that is a long shot and very expensive for a long shot.
Hope this makes sense - we aren't very handy as a family but desperate to get the car on the road again! Any ideas gratefully recieved
Kia Carens any ideas

you have a parasitic draw - it needs testing properly to find the issue
You need to find a garage or auto electrician who knows what they are doing
first thing to check is the alternator working correctly at idle and around 3000rpm, visually inspect the wiring to the alternator and starter from the battery
check the earths/grounds give them the tug test (just pull it)
Off the top of my head it sounds like you have 2 issues, a intermittent wiring fault on the crank sensor (explains the cutting out) and the other is a parasitic draw (start with removing the interior bulbs or pull the fuse for them)
Throwing parts at the car just going by a code is wrong way to go and costly
Edit. just a thought have you had the fuel filter changed if so was it a good quality/KIA part (a common cause for random cutting out)

The usual culprit is the diode pack in the alternator leaking to earth. This would only explain the battery issue. I agree that thee might be fuel starvation and the fuel filter is worth a look. The fuel pump (if electric) can also be dodgy and cause cut outs. It is sometimes hard to spot intermittent faults on diagnostics.
