If the OP's son built the machine as said then he might have put a bigger PSU in than if it's a ready built machine.
MSI is the maker of the graphics card. The model is what's needed.
Is there any label you can see on on the PSU (That's the metal box inside the case that the mains lead goes into)
That little monitoring app. "Speed Fan" can monitor the voltages as well.

will look for labels and make of PSU later, have already got th app that gives you temps and voltages will take another look at it.

Yes, IIRC the speed fan app can record most stuff onto a log.
You can set alarms on it, and have it email you the results as well.

Have you tried HDD to scan the hard drives? Could be the hard drive and it is trying to boot of another device (f) if it cannot be seen properly?
