Mazda 6 - Ongoing issue with brake calliper binding ?

Post by Simonlane1 »

I have a 2008 Mazda 6 which had new brake disks and pads fitted in January.

In March the OSR disc had to be replaced as the calliper was apparently binding, this was replaced also as was the hose.

In April the same thing happened again and the calliper and hose were replaced under warranty assumed faulty.

In June the same problem on the same wheel has happened again and it is binding.

What could be causing this frustrating ongoing issue ?

Going by the history I would be checking the abs sensor on that wheel, Otherwise I would be looking at the abs pump, pull the fuse for the abs, pump the brakes a few times and see if it releases

I take it they have looked at the handbrake cables ? do you park on a hill ?

Bit late in reading this:
This is a common issue and is normally caused by the 2 pins that the caliper slides on. These
pins seize in the housing and need to be removed,de-rusted and refitted with a small amount of copa-grease.

[owner of 3 mazdas in succession.......]
BTW, in this case it's not the ABS system Bob.

I had to replace the rear caliper on my 6, it was also seized, piston and
on the slide pins, as this is common on a lot of cars I would assume that the
mechanic cleaned and greased the pins as a matter of course, but if the pins
have been damaged some how ~ bent or maybe the surface has galled
then maybe they should be replace rather than faff about trying to make good.
The hand brake sticking on is something else I'd look at, have you noticed any
change in the H/brake travel?
You can normally smell a sticking caliper, has a distinct 'hot' smell, brown brake dust over the wheel.
As for copper grease on the pins, that's a topic that'll cause heated debate, some say
it shouldn't be used with rubber, others will cry 'Tosh! I've used it for years with no problem!"
The Workshop manual says to use red rubber grease, that's all I'll say on the matter.

This is a second thread, the op has had the calliper replaced twice, pads and disc as well as the rear hose, pins where the first thing to be checked as it was done by independent garage

btw it isn't the slide pins

ps. I tend to use a ceramic grease like Permatex - yes the subject is a large can of worm
