I wouldn't waste my time with water butts. Saving waste water in the home is a good thing to do though and costs nothing.
I have 8 butts and plan to increase that number.
Comments about costs put a conversation with a plumber to mind. I mentioned an idea to use waste bath water to flush the downstairs toilet." Waste of time "he said ," you'd only be saving a couple of pence" . I explained how the idea is to focus on saving water rather than saving money. "But it's only pennies worth off water " was his reply and try as I did I could not get him to think of it on any other terms that the costs in money.
i tried an experiment
have a bath the minimum i can get away with is about 50L
transfered to 2/3L bottles and used to flush the toilet at perhaps 3-5L a time so about 12-14 flushes
now made me feel good but decided the half hour or so it costs whilst worth while could be better spent to save around 11p
innovations that" save the planet" will only ever be close to cost effective if factored in from new especially for low cost high volume items

Out of interest what did you do instead that was more worth while?
With reference to the butts I've got all of mine for nothing although I've considered getting an IBC container which I'd probably have to buy. As it is the only containers I've brought are some plastic jerry cans for drinking water storage which I wanted to have new clean containers for.

As I said, if your butts are free, and you are not pumping water then it does make sense.

IBC's can be had for free, my local car wash has them from time to time (I guess some kind of valeting fluids comes in them) and will let you have them. The problem is though they are translucent and they grow algae really quickly.

my garden is grass it gets cut when needed no other care other than weed control around the edge no watering
the "more worth while" is doing mostly wood based tasks for freinds and family in the community

Well this is ultimate handyman so it shouldn't be beyond the realms of our combined intelligence to come up with a way to keep the sunlight out

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.
