Tiling on top of wbp plywood

Hello All,

Is any one still tiling on top of ply. I believe it is frowned upon now but I can not get my head around these new alternatives.

Has any one used things such as no more ply and is it any good.

the now usual i get round here is 5.5/11.5mm ply is complete carp if wet as the surface layers are micro thin
they also seem to dellamminate very quickly

It is a no go with ply really as the tiles invariably pop off. It is best to use something like Aquapanel or Hardibacker, cement based board, in the wet areas and plasterboard in the dry zones. The tiles will go on much better and stick, just be a bit careful if you are using these modern massive size tiles as weight is a factor. It is more or less the same process to screw up boards as it is ply.

I think I should have been clearer in my explanation.

I am referring to over boarding the floor with 12mm wbp ply.

Would it be OK if I was to screw it down every 100mm to stop it moving.

The tiles are 600x300 porcelain.

I got a 5ltr in case I use the ply on the floor. However, I am listening to the advice off you men on here and I think the ply I already bought to do the job might get the elbow and I will use No More Ply instead.

I thought it would be better value to buy 5ltr rather as I need some for mixing in cement motor but I think I might have overestimated as usual.Ha.

We had a eastern european builder tile our bathrooms and he used plywood. All the tiles came loose in next to no time.

Not sure if it was the ply bending with moisture or that the adhesive just didn't stuck to the tile.

Not sure why anyone would use ply. and not the "no more ply" backer boards. it's not all that more expensive than plywood.

On commercial jobs we still use plywood - but we are covering sometimes hundreds of square feet. We always screw down on either 100mm or 150mm centres with the heads fully sunk (this may require a special screw such as Hilti whiterock screws if you aren't willing to pilot and countersink). It isn't sealed before it goes down, but then if there is any question about the screed/concrete beneath it (if that's what is there) then that gets a coat of green liquid DPM before we start (allowed to dry overnight if possible). Tilers seem to universally favour rapid set adhesives with Bal, Ball, Ardex and Mapei used most commonly in my experience
