Hole saw for thin metal?
Need to drill a 80mm hole in some thin galvanized metal, to make a smoker. Have always used "Starrett" in the past, but at £40 for something I will only use once is a bit steep. Cheap hole saws tend to be for wood and non ferrous, any alternatives or better makes, that will do the job? Thanks Nos

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
Jigsaw or drill mounted nibbler would be ideal for this size hole, assuming thickness as above.

Clamp it between two pieces of wood and drill through the wood.
Don't take it personally......

After the fire I lost everything so at least now I can buy a new jigsaw
and will use it in years to come, thanks.

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
Buy a cheaper hole saw.
Ive used loads of cheap holesaws. Even the Titan branded ones from screwfix work fine.

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
Thanks Hitch I do have some hole saws some "Wolf" ones and some cheap ones, have measured the thickness and its .80 mm, I would prefer to use a hole saw as it will be a neater job, so think I will give it a go when I get some flue pipe, thanks again. Nos

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
Tow pieces of wood work well especially if securely clamped , you get a neat hole and now distortion of the plate. Also done this at work when I snapped a mandril and dint have a spare , once you have a hole in a piece of wood with hole and clamp no need for mandril.

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
As long as its not the type where numerous ones fit onto a large back plate/mandrel at once.

Re: Hole saw for thin metal?
Managed to cut a nice hole, had to use one of the cheapo stackable sets at about £4, I took my time with DW putting oil on all the time and stopping regularly to stop overheating, didn't think it was going to work, but it did, the saw of course now, would struggle to cut through warm butter
, but Iam happy
now to get the pig in for smoking
