Router Cutters

Just curious if people have particular prefrences with all the brands of cutters avaliable.. what do you use...

my own personal opinion is this...

I try to always use tct cutters, and always avoid high speed steel cutters, Im not bothered about using a certain brand, I couldnt care less if I bought a box of 20 cutters all tct for a fiver, if that box happened to have the profile I wanted and did the job I required it for thats good enough for me... however I do always look at the build quality, the cutting edges of the cutters make sure they have no chips or damage on them, I also make sure the bearings are ok too...
I've been down the path of buying expensive sets for a few cutters and wont do it again as they dont get the use to warrent the expence.
for worktops I use a throw away tip style, made by trend.

i buy every reduced price router set i see

and the ones you use the most you buy a decent one and spend £7 to £25 on buying a quality cutter

i have over 300 router bits around 50 are expensive[more than £5]average around £12

fair play...

Unfortunatly I dont get much oppertunity to play with my own routers, I only have a few sets of cutters, I use a beast of a machine at work every day, same old cutter in it (replacable tip) for cutting through worktops or making bolt routings, feel like im a dust monster most days...

ok what i was realy saying was

you buy a 40 piece s/f or machine mart set for £50 you work it to death so you will have used about half the 40 cutters of the 20 you regulary use 10 will be used 1 to 5 times a month so the set cutters will be fine as they are occasional use
of the other 10 5 will be medium use so on the list for future decent cutter

the other 5 will be definate "decent cutter list

I have a couple of 1/4" sets, 10 cutters for £15 type, and a big set of 1/2" unbranded ones. About 30 cutters for £30. Anything special, i normally get screwfix, faithfull or from Axminster's perform range.
I think theres one or two trend craft ones in there aswell. But only beceause thats what was available when i needed them.
The cheap ones are adequate for my needs. When they dull, just touch them up with a diamond lap.

Very easy, just do the back of the cutter rather than the edge.

I similarly have a lot of cheap cutters but you get what you pay for. I have bought some Tornado specials from Rutlands when they are on offer, such as door and box making sets, and they have been good.

It depends what you are cutting I guess, I do not mind dulling a cheap cutter on a job but I think twice about using the more expenisve ones.

trend cutters and ive got a box of odd no brand things for the odd job, reminds me i need a new 10mm cutter for intermisant strips
