How to "adjust" one proud kitchen wall tile - help please

Hello,

A great Forum with plenty of sound advice - thanks.

I have just completed tiling our kitchen (first timer at 77!) and I am fairly happy with the result, with the exception of one tile - it stands slightly proud of the rest and I would like to replace it!

The tiles are 30cm x 7cm porcelain.

First - is it advisable to attempt this - the tiles have been set for about 5 days?
Second, if so, then how best to remove the tile without damage to adjacent tiles? Small cold chisel and hammer in the centre and then remove the bits? Or, is there a better way?

I have plenty of spare tiles.

Remove the grout from around the tile. The break it using a punch/chisel etc (care of the splinters of course) as you suggest and pick it out best you can.

I would wait a few weeks before trying it though, make sure the other tiles are nice and firm otherwise you are at a much greater risk of loosening adjacent tiles.

Another tip is to drill a few holes in the tile, although this might not be easy with porcelain. When you chisel in, cracks will run to the holes making breakout a bit easier and controlled.

The consensus seems to be to have a go at it - but to wait for a while.

I may try drilling first - but I can imagine how difficult that is likely to be with porcelain.

The idea is to work at the centre of the tile out, keep away from the edges. Drilling helps to break a starting point. So if you can get a good hole in the centre you can chip towards the edges in steps. You want to minimise the risk of chipping an adjacent tile by getting a chisel to close to the edge gap.
