Does this mean that if a bloke walks through the village carrying a 4.2 metre ally ladder on his shoulder, he is technically breaking the law if it doesn't have a red rag on the end? Been there, done that.If an item extends more than two metres rearward .... it needs to have a marking to show that projection.

Already been linked to. My comment was that it wasn't illegal, he just needed to hang a flag on the end.

I think it is actually illegal, iirc you can only extend 1m beyond the vehicle, (unless that's just for a roof rack).Rorschach wrote:Already been linked to. My comment was that it wasn't illegal, he just needed to hang a flag on the end.

Thing is ayjay, you're probably think like me, I don't want to find out the hard way by ending up standing in court.ayjay wrote:I think it is actually illegal, iirc you can only extend 1m beyond the vehicle, (unless that's just for a roof rack).Rorschach wrote:Already been linked to. It looks dangerous, and almost certainly is. You can imagine what would happen inside the car if a truck hit that ladder and it bent up.

Re: Thats handy
Here is the relevant information.
https://assets.publishing.service.gov.u ... _loads.pdf
For 2 meters or less the marker type is not specified, it just needs to be something deemed suitable. In the old days a red cloth, today I would say a hiz viz vest tied on would be ideal.
Loads over 2 meters required a sign as show in the info above, 610mm wide.
If it's less than 1 meter, you don't need to do anything, but it would be silly not to, just in case. As I said, a hi viz vest is ideal.
