I have just purchased a Bosch palm router gkf 600
I am trying to route a rebate using a standard square bit. I can control the depth easily but am having difficulty with the roller guide to control the width of the cut. I’m making a box and the width of the end on wood pieces need to match the width of the rebate. So if I am working with half inch material I will need the bit to go in exactly half an inch. The problem is that the guide ball fence will only allow around 5mm of lateral wood removal which seems very odd unless I have set it up incorrectly?? Has anyone had similar problems? Not sure but with a roller will help as the width is fixed
Best wishes

heeelllooo and welcome surgeon
you buy bearing off different sizes you will need a 1/4" cutter but here is a 1/2" example

or this one with 3 barings

you can also remove the bearing and use the fence to give the correct rebate
also bearings arnt a standard centre so buy the cutter and bearing in the same set or from the same place making sure they fit

Actually, you are using the wrong fence! The follow bearing fence is designed for laminate trimming and is specifically used with a cutter of the same or smaller diameter than the bearing: For anything other than laminate trimming it simply isn't possible to control the cut adequately - and that's also why the "rebate width" is somewhat restricted. For rebating you need to use either a rebate bearing bit: which works well on curved or small work pieces (the diameter of bearing controls the width of the rebate). Or a straight cutter with the straight fence: For safety's sake the width of the rebate must NEVER be more than 1/2 the diameter of the cutter - so a 5mm wide rebate would require a cutter of >10mm (ideally 12 to 16mm). That is to avoid kickback. Similarly you need to be careful not to overload the router or the cutter by cutting too deeply/heavily.Surgeon wrote:So if I am working with half inch material I will need the bit to go in exactly half an inch.
