Are large 1000mm kitchen Wall Cabinets A Good Choice?

I am looking to put up some kitchen cabinets in my utility to add extra storage space. I would like to do this as economically as I can as I still have the kitchen and bathroom to do. I was thinking about putting up 3* 1000 units but I vaguely remember reading somewhere that they can bend.


Do you regularly use 1000 until or is it better to use smaller ones?

Does anyone have experience of using B&Q Cooke & Lewis 1000 x 900 or 1000 x 720mm

I believe they are 18mm thick.

Any recommendation of cabinets to consider welcome

Yes they sag, you always put more weight in them than you think. And the shelf will probably only be 15mm so thats worse.

It would be possible to strengthen them (a sheet of particle board or mdf let into the back recess) but a much better solution would be 2 x 500mm units or if you have space, 2 x 600mm.

What is the price difference? If 2 x 500mm is only slightly more expensive than 1 x 1000mm then go for it. When we did our kitchen the 1000mm unit was only a few £'s more expensive than a single 500mm, so it would have been very expensive to go that way. I went with the 1000mm and added extra support myself, no sag on the main carcass, minimal sag on the shelf.

I'm with Arco on this one - longer cabinets are far more prone to sagging in the middle and simply cannot carry the same weight as two 500mm cabinets, so taking a longer term view I'd draw the line at 600mm length or less on upper cabinets

I've got a 1000mm wall unit, has a central divide, no sign of sagging and it's been up 10 years.

RHS is fully loaded with china, LHS fairly light stuff.

Sheraton units though... dunno if that makes a difference.

Proper full divide, but still a 1000 mm unit

That is probably helping then. My 1000mm units only have a central post, that was part of the reason I decided to add extra support.
