Wall skimming

Post by sx_turbo »

Currently decorating lounge, at the moment I've removed the old dado rail and started removing the lining paper.

The walls are in a pretty poor state underneath the plaster, I'll remove all the flaky bits of paint etc first.

My question is, I only need a skim on the walls, can I leave the skirting board and architrave in place?

I have 2 reasons, firstly I don't have time and money to replace, secondly the previous owner was a carpenter by trade and has done a lovely job of fitting the skirting and architrave.

P.s I'm not gonna do it, I'm gonna get a pro in just haven't found one yet

I have had many walls skimmed for just this reason, and the answer is a resounding "YES".

The only thing I would suggest to try is, mask off the skirtings first, it saves cleaning. But don't take the masking tape (use a waterproof one) right up to the wall, leave a 3mm gap, otherwise when you remove it, you may chip the edge of the skim.

Having said that, it isn't too difficult to clean up after the skim has gone off, it's just time consuming & messy.

Ideally you will isolate the electrics on the day and remove the sockets & switches.

Very good tip above, recently did it with gaffer tape, small gap and you get a much better finish than the old spread brushing the skirting with wet brush
