Twit replacing ceiling roses

Post by Trif »

Hello electrickery people and thank you in advance for any help.

I removed three ceiling roses for bright shiny new ones as direct replacement.
Or so i thought.

The old plates had the loop on the right hand side rather than in the middle like the new ones.

I took a photo of the middle rose which was the most complicated. But of course, once i removed the old plate.. i just had a load of wires and couldn't match them to the photo :?

I've tried every configuration for the browns until i lose the plot completely.. forget what I've done, what i haven't done, forget the result.. etc etc.

I've looked up every YouTube video there is on wiring ceiling roses. I've read up on every diy site out there. You are my last hope.

There are:
3 switches
3 roses
Also connection to the bathroom pull switch.
1 switch - light 1
1 double switch - lights 2 & 3
1 switch - lights 2 & 3

Photos and diagram attached.

Any replies, please pretend you're talking to a 5 year old.
I understand the concept of breaking the circuit and going off to and coming back from the switch.. but there's just too many of them..

Cheers

Twit replacing ceiling roses

This is just my theory it's very late (3AM) and I only got up for a drink, I could be wrong:-

I'm confused as to why the end 2 terminals are labeled loop, normally switched live feed to pendant(and light 3 here).
The middle 3 look like the loop with the sleeved brown (Or Is that a double insulated single core cable?) with writing on as switched live (to wall switch)
So if you have 2 single core wires then they're the light switch.
That leaves 3 browns to sort out - two will be the loop and one to light 3
Having a multi meter would help here.

Maybe someone else can step in and check my thinking and come up with a cunning plan for the 3 browns other than trial and error without a DMM or continuity checker.
I have seen lighting wiring where the looped pair have been taped together with the switched live left loose, maybe give the wiring a pull and see if 2 are taped together?

Nightly bye.

Top tip..never pick up your phone when you get up for a drink or a wee!

That was part of the problem; the old rose plates were different to the new ones (which have the loop in the middle).

There are two sleeved browns in the mix. One is marked switch. I thought the other might be the bathroom link?

I strangely forgot to mention.. in most of the configs i tried, the switch to light 1 only came on when the light switch to 2&3 was on. And light 3 just didn't work. No matter where i put the browns :cb

I can get a multimeter. Would be great if someone could explain what I'd be looking for and what to do with the result.

Thanks muchly :salute:
