New light fitting - 4 wires???

Hi everyone

Wife’s bought a new ceiling light but it has 4 wires?

I’ve replaced all our other ceiling lights but they’ve only ever had 3 wires (brown, blue, earth) and I used wagos to connect them to the original wiring correctly (brown to switch live, blue to neutral wago and earth to earth wago, whilst remaining loop lives connected together).

This new light has the following wires;
L - Black - Live phase
L1 - Brown - Live phase
N - Blue - Neutral
PE - Yellow/Green - Earth

This extra black wire has me stumped?

I’ve attached the fittings instructions but as I don’t have a black L wire in the ceiling to connect this to, what do I do?

My gut is tellIng me the following:
Connect both L (black) and L1 (brown) to the switch live wago
Connect the earth to earth wago
Connect the blue to the neutral wago

Is this right?

What country was the light fitting made in?
Does it have a "transformer" / what type of lamps does it require
Couple of pictures of the light fitting (One from the front and one from the back)

My thinking is. Manufacturers like to keep costs down, so there must be a reason for the extra wire.

Was bought off wayfair ...looking on the website it says made in Poland.
Takes e47 bulbs.
Transformer? It just has the wire pictured earlier coming out the top.
Will get some pics later.

Here’s a few pics of fitting.
Now I’m thinking should I just connect the 4 wires to the terminal as instructed and just use my own piece of flex to connect the blue, brown and earth to the wagos and just leave the black wire from the fitting as a dead-end in the terminal?

What do people think?

Wire it as No.3, it's designed for multiple markets and voltages

L1 is possibly for emergency lighting power

Do I just leave the wire loose then? Or screw it into the terminal as a dead-end?

The diagrams you have shown..............they have numbers, what else is on the piece of paper with the diagrams?
Please post a (in focus, as you have done so far) picture of what else there is on the paper, maybe the other side too?

These are the full instructions attached, all other writing on the sheet is just repeated instructions in varying languages.

The way I read that it would seem it can have an "odd" lamp.
I would use brown blue and Green/yellow as normal and put the black in a choc bloc (or wago) on its own.

I would also use a multi meter to find out what the black is connected to.

Hi all

Following the advice and instructions I wired it up as picture 3, using the blue, brown and earth wires and left the leftover black wire in its own wago.

But as you can see in the pic only two lamps of the 5 are working?
Any ideas?

I’ve attached a pic of how I’ve wired it, don’t think I’ve made an error, it must be that extra black wire?

Should I just lump it in the same terminal as the brown???

Thoughts would be warmly received.

So...whilst I had all my equipment out thought I might as well try swapping the lights black (L) wire and it’s blue (L1) wire around...so the black (L) goes to Live and the blue (L1) goes to its own dead-end wago...and now only the other 3 lamps work as can be seen in the pic.

This seems strange to me? As the notion that the spare wire may be for emergency lighting is out the window as without this wire hooked up it wouldn’t work properly.

So now my gut feeling is I was right and I should just stick both the black (L) and the blue (L1) to my switch live flex....but before I sit down and think it’s all done...is it safe? I can’t really see why it wouldn’t be?

You have no choice, but you did it the right way.
If you were wrong and the black did something else, then you would have found the hard way you should not do that. So although it has been a pain to do what you have done, you are safe.

...........And if you had have had a multi meter you could have found out what the wires were for first.
