And I did have a multimeter, used it to test wiring was dead before working on it. Wasn’t really sure how to test those wires as you said though, but in the end we got there.
All working now and just happy it’s safe.

May I suggest you "practice" with your multi meter more, so that next time, you will be more confident and know what to do with it
