Plumbing fittings misuse

Post by chrrris »

Not the first time I've seen this, but definitely had the biggest knock on effect. A 1/2" female iron connector used instead of a tap connector on this toilet cistern. It must have been fitted to the fill valve inlet, *then* piped up, and finally boxed in and had the rest of the bathroom built around it. Fill valve broke, and no chance of getting to that pipework or fitting, so I ended up pulling half of the customers bathroom apart to be able to get to the pipework to replace the dodgy fitting, before rebuilding the boxwork. What would have been a half-hour job ended up taking half a day.

Apparently fitted 12 years ago by a "professional builder" according to the customer -- well he may be a pro builder, but he's deffo no plumber.

Oh, and not a single pipe clip to be seen anywhere in the house.

I bet the plastic thread got damaged, done the same thing myself with a straight compression fitting, he was lucky to get it tightened up in the right position!

Heheh! I used a multi-tool on the plastic as part of my (ultimately failed) attempts at keyhole surgery and didn't examine the female iron, but I'm guessing it had a ton of PTFE tape in it to seal the deal. I reckon it was definitely a "blimey, it doesn't leak - quick get the invoice in, and let's get out of here" job.
