Possible damp cause mid-terrace internal wall

Help required! This image is a downstairs internal party wall from a Victorian mid-terrace, 2-up, 2-down. The damp runs in a band between the two chimney breasts across both the front and back rooms, but is not on the chimney breasts themselves. Please can anyone advise what the cause of this damp might be and how it can be fixed?

Could you post pics with the furniture pulled away from the wall and the chimney breast - stand back for a larger view.
Same for the back room.

Hi, thanks for your response. Unfortunately as this is a probate property halfway across the country from us, we aren't going to be able to return there for a few weeks! The only other picture we currently have is this one of the back room, just after it had been entirely re-plastered (only 18 months ago). Frustratingly, you can see clearly see the new plaster is wet before it has been painted, exactly where the problem is now. As my uncle, who commissioned the work, has now passed away, I'm not sure we have any recourse to get the job re-done properly, and we still need to find the cause of the damp in the first place.....
