How to secure ceiling rose / cabling issue

Post by spr0ut »

I have just changed a ceiling rose in one of my bedrooms. When I unscrewed the old one I found that one screw was well secured into a joist whilst one was just into paster.

The cable coming out of the ceiling isn't very long and I was wary of pulling out more as it didn't pull through easily when I tried. Last thing I want to do is damage cable or the ceiling!

So, what I have done is put up the new ceiling rose as before - one screw very tight and the other one not. It holds ok so I guess it'll be ok, but does anyone have any suggestions - either how to get more cable out without damage or if there is another thing I can do to hold the other screw?

I'm not an electrician but what I normally do if the cables are too short are to use these to extend the cable.

You'll obviously need to have more cable if you don't already have some.

I am not at all good at electrics but I would get up in the loft and fit a new junction box with a longer flex connected to allow you to connect it easily to the rose. Of course this will depend on how complex the wiring is and I would be defeated if it was more than three wires. On fitting the rose I take it you put a wall plug in for the plaster fitting screw? I am sure one of our regular sparks will give a better instruction and a photo posted of the wires in the inerim may help.

I had same scenario in 2006. An niceic was wiring a ceiling light for me, cable was very short just about reach and managed, he didn't bother to go to the floor above and lift floorboards, todate still the same and working. If you can go to the loft and manage then you decide. One screw fixed to the joist and other to plasterboard is fine, just use plasterboard plug similar to any of the one in the link:

When I have to fix anything to the ceiling ( smoke alarms, co2 detectors etc ) I use these https://www.screwfix.com/p/fischer-plas ... pack/81956 and they have never failed me.

Sorry to ask, but did you mean Carbon Monoxide detectors?
Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

I was also thinking (for the OP) how about a narrow / long piece of wood? Poke it through the hole, screw into that to spread the load.
