3 Gang 2 way wiring, please help

Post by Al Sylvester »

I'm trying to replace an old 3 gang 2 way switch. The old switch has wiring coded L1, L2 and L3 but the new replacement is only coded L1, L2 and COM. Having reviewed several ideas, I'm not convinced that wiring the L3 into the COM is the right option. I've attached photo's to help, but could someone please provide some clarification? Many thanks in advance.

Old switch New switch

L1 = Com

L2 = L1

L3 = L2

Probably a good idea to mark each core with marker pen or similar so that you don't get anything confunded.

In addition because you are fitting a metal switch you'll need to run a new earth wire from the back box terminal to the earth terminal on the switch

Verwood Handyman, sincere apologies for my lengthy delay, I must admit, I was very apprehensive rewiring the switch, as there was hardly a millimeter spare of any of the wires. However, I've successfully achieved it this morning, thanks to your amazing advice. Thank you so much, you are a star. I will definitely donate to UHM's charity, as you have undoubtedly saved me a wee fortune. Thank you again, and please keep up your incredible work and advice. Thumbs up, Al

Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

:mrgreen: If gloom had a voice, it would be me.
