How to fit this ceiling pendant?

Hi guys

We bought this pendant lamp and tried to fit it ourselves, but upon inspection, realised we didn't really understand how it works, in the context of the ceiling light we intended to switch it from.

It has two parts - one of which has some sort of plug in socket but I have no idea where to "plug it in into".

I guess that the lamp fixture is supposed to be fixed to the socket, then the actually bulb connector can be "hung" from where we want the light to hover.

But that still doesn't help me understand how I'm supposed to connect it :(.

My friend who is a beginner electrician reckons we need to keep the existing white fixture, as it has all the correct wiring.

Any ideas?

Your friend might me right, what looks like the "main bit" has no rear cable entry. (If it did then you would take down the existing ceiling rose and put up "the main bit")
What do the instructions say? and can you take another couple of pictures with it "Stretched out"
As it is sitting in a box coiled up its hard to see where the cable goes, so if you take it out of the box and stretch it out (not literally stretch it, more un twist it) It would help.

The cord is 3 metres long, OP must have a very high ceiling!

A better picture is needed of the ceiling fitment, the part wrapped in a bag, top right of OP's second picture, that has a screw in the side of it (and one the opposite side, no doubt). It won't be rocket science.

As it is sitting in a box coiled up its hard to see where the cable goes, so if you take it out of the box and stretch it out (not literally stretch it, more un twist it) It would help.

I think the "Designed in Denmark" is the clue.

Looking at the ceiling fitting,



There appears to be a screw (there is probably 2, even 3) holding the two parts together. Separate them and one part will fit against the ceiling, although, if it doesn't 'hit' a joist then you may well have to reinforce with a length of timber above the plasterboard to screw into.

The way I would do it would be to mark all the connections in the ceiling rose, remove the rose, and then use WAGO connectors so that it can all be hidden within the void. DON'T forget an extra Earth flylead to take to the new mounting plate.

Cut off the existing connector. It appears to be just something "Danish". Strip the wires and connect them (through the fittings) to the WAGO's. Supporting the lamp, attach the ceiling plate and connect Earth flylead. Push excess cable up into the void and assemble lamp.

It will require certainly more than one person.

The existing connector looks like the back of "push connectors" (The "new fangled" version of connector strip, no tools required.)

You are also supposed to put wago connectors in an enclosure before putting them in a void. Wago make a box just for this purpose.

Wago boxes. Ideally yes but depends upon what space can be opened up. The existing looks like 'just a hole for the wires'.

Using the wago box is part of what makes wagos "maintenance free" it also stops anything touching any part of the conductor, If the holes is too small make it bigger.
If you go to "the letter of the manufacturers instructions" you should secure the box down (Need a bigger hole to get your hand in) and then you put a cable tie on the box so you need a pair of cutters to cut the tie to open it.

So it IS possible to replace my existing rose fixture and with the gold/brass coloured first fixture?

Because the electrician who came around said we had only two options - 1) keep the existing white rose fixture + the (new) gold fixture for where we want the drop to be. I can't remember the 2nd option, but I think it involved snipping off the hang fixture and just having the drop in the same place as where the light is today.

But you guys are suggesting a proper installation is possible?

I'm wondering how I can succinctly advise the steps involved and method?

Seconded.

From what we've learnt so far (and we still don't have the requested pictures) it would appear that the new item is designed to be fitted to the ceiling - completely in place of, instead of, the existing rose. They don't have those where the fitting comes from. Only the wires coming out of the ceiling. So remove it - BUT this forum gets bombarded by people who undo all the wires without noting what goes where.

Though various options have blindly been mooted, it should not be necessary to (a) put Wago connectors in a Wagobox in the void above the ceiling, forget that. (b) it's quite possible that the white block supplied can be used to make the connections, but again we're clutching at straws with no pictures nor do we have the installation instructions - only you have those.

I don't have much faith in your electrician friends, this is not rocket science and any keen & coherent DIY'er could sort it out, quite easily.

I do still wonder though, the cord on this fitting is 3 metres long so your ceiling is at least 5 metres off the floor?
