EU ceiling light fixture in the UK?

Hi guys,

We're really interested in this particular ceiling pendant light (https://royaldesign.co.uk/cannonball-cluster-2-pendant), but concerned about their statement on the website "As we are based in Sweden, all our lamps/electrical items are made to the European standard of 230 Volts, and come with an EU plug. You may need an adapter for your product to function properly.".

Will it be a headache/impossible for a reasonably qualified electrician to install this in my UK property?

Depends on whom you employ to install it. It does NOT require an electrician. I can't see it having a plug, its a ceiling light.

It says that on most of the products they are advertising there. I guess some fancy marketing bod didn't really understand. The vast majority of Ikea lamps come from Sweden or EU countries, and as far as I know only their floor standing lamps come with plugs. More than likely, that ball thing in the middle has tails to connect. One exception to this is the 'slide out' connector with one part on the ceiling, and the other as part of the ball.

Maybe drop them an email asking for details of how that specific lamp is fitted and connected.

You do realise that you'll also have to buy the shades for the pendants?

£49 only gets the hanging arrangement with bulb holders: add 2 X £64 for the shades/bulb covers.

I use the plug in ceiling rose that @camallison links to, but there are many more, the Ashley Klik is likely the most popular, also Eterna and the BG LSCPLG-01 in other words no British standard or EU standard, I think they are all rated at 6 amp and should be 5 kg, although I note the Eternal says 2.2 kg but BS 7671 says "In places where the fixing means is intended to support a pendant luminaire. the fining means shall be capable of carrying a mass of not less than 5 kg. If the mass of the luminaire is greater than 5 kg, the installer shall ensure that the fixing means is capable of supporting the mass of the pendant luminaire." So how that one gets away to 2.2 kg not sure.

We used them in our house in Germany so that lights could be terminated easily at ground level before hanging. The house has been rented out to tenants since we returned to the uk decades ago. They can easily hang, change, take down any light fixtures they have. An electrical installation deposit is held when they give up the tenancy until the rental agency has checked that none or part of them is missing. Focus their attention guarantees no losses!
