Which light switch is which?

Post by tadaska »

I bought 3 light switches, 2 supposed to be double (whatever that means) for my hallway and one single for my kitchen.

The bag in the pic without a switch had a double which I fitted in my hallway and it's working fine.

I was going to fit the single switch in my kitchen next but it looks just like the double I still have to fit at the other end of my hallway.

What's going on here?

The packets say single and double but they both look the same.

They are 1 gang (one switch) - the one on the right is 2 way (used in 2 way switching) 3 screw terminals and the one in the middle is 1 way (a basic on/off switch) 2 screw terminals

The large packet is a 13 amp double socket

I think I've mixed it all up :D

I've got 2 white bags and one blue (middle), ignore the socket bag.

I used one from a white bag for the hallway.

I have those 2 left, one is from the white bag and one is from the blue.

But they look the same. How do I find out which is for the hallway and which is for the kitchen?

Anyone?

It looks like they are both 2 way even though one of them came from a 1 way bag. Unless I'm wrong and one is 1 way but visually I can't tell which one it is.

If they are both 2 way can I use a 2 way as a 1 way switch?

I really want to get those switches done today.

If you are sure they are both 2-way then you can use either as 1 way.
You use the Com and 1 way terminals.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

Thanks, all sorted, except for one socket, it's going to need back box savers. But at least it's all connected and working.

They use the same moulding for both 1 and 2 way - 1way will have 2 screws and the 2 way will have 3
