Gu10 bulbs for soffits ?

Post by jono4001 »

Looking to replace the bulbs in the ten exterior front of house mounted led GU10 Downlights to something a bit brighter. Have seen bulbs fitted that give of a lovely definitive light beam rather than just a random splash of light on the brickwork that most do, what sort of angle would I require from the bulbs to give this particular effect and any recommended bulbs in the cool white style ?
Most bulbs I am looking at say 120 degrees light spread but feel sure it will require less ?

Short of measuring the angle I would say it would be a case of try it to see what your are happy with.
I just did a quick search and found some that are, 36, 40, and 110 degrees.

Gu10 bulbs for soffits ?

I got some colour changing GU10 smart bulbs, designed to be fitted over the stairs, but not done that yet, so tried them in kitchen, all it says is use Smart life app, 5 watt and 500 lumen, it does not give the angle of light, and the app allows you to select either warm/cool or colour, not both, and it seems it uses different LED's within the lamp to give colour or warm/cool light, so the spread also changes, so may not be as easy as it seems to find right lamp.

It is true that RGB and RGB+W lamps do have separate LEDs for the colours and as such the beam angle will be slightly different for each colour, BUT jono4001 clearly said

no where did he ask for colour or colour changing, so your statement although true is pointless.

So it seemed he wants to shine some colour on the bricks rather than show where one can walk. Maybe I misread what he wanted.

Okay thanks guys sorry yes lighting just to accent the brickwork as opposed to the ground below !

Not sure if some fitters are using adjustable angle downlighters as I see from looking around some houses around my area some seem to have a lot of light shining on the wall beneath the light . Our Downlights are fixed type but can imagine if they were the adjustable angle type then more light would show on wall if angled correctly ?

May be you should consider removing a fixed downlight, measuring the diameter of the mounting hole, then sourcing a matching tilting fitment.

Then, you want a wide (or any) beam angle, and direct it towards the wall to be illuminated.

Tilting fitments to accept GU10s are not expensive, just take care in checking hole size required. Not rocket science!

Okay thanks yep certainly an idea . Looked up tiltable gu10 gimbals and I see you can buy just the base and bulb holder itself , idea was to keep all the current wiring etc as it is and just use the tiltable base but I notice these particular gimbals don’t have a glass protection cover on them like my ones do meaning the bulb itself would be exposed ..pity as they looked great and were only a couple of quid each .

Anyone any idea if you can buy tiltable base gimbals with the waterproof glass protection ? Only other ones I have seen are the bathroom ip65type that are enclosed behind the bulb for obvious reasons .

Given that the fittings are under soffits, they don't need to be that waterproof?

Most GU10 bulbs are "sealed" by having a glass "lens"?

So the fittings you found would be fine?
