Chromebook, have you got one?

Post by Someone-Else »

My laptop is being awkward and very slow at re installing windows (it's been almost 24 hours, deleting and reinstalling, still not finished) so I was thinking about a chromebook, so have you got one? and if so what do you think to it?

Try loading and running a version of Linux instead. You can boot one straight from a USB key without even installing it.

Linux makes a once-slow PC/laptop 'fly' - installs without any issues for most hardware (autodetects), is a whole load more secure, is free, has auto updates that don't 'destroy' your machine etc. Try Ubuntu for a user-friendly intro.

It might take a short while to understand the differences but the GUI is a lot simpler than you might expect. if you find the need to run Windoze-only software you can also install and run a virtual machine that will load/run ANY operating system WITHIN the linux kernel and all your programs will be accessible.

Keeping up with the hardware upgrades necessary to maintain a Windoze environment has always irked me but changing to Linux not only gives you back the processing power it also gives you a sh1t load more security than Wondoze ever could/can.

I've got a HP x360 chromebook. It connects to my Android phone easily. It's a lot lighter and smaller than the laptop and therefore easier to carry and use on the move. The keyboard folds behind the screen (keyboard is isolated) so turns it into a tablet. Battery life is very good. Picture quality and sound also very good. Start up and running speed far better than my Windows 10 laptop. I use it mainly for banking, emails, online shopping, anything that doesn't need a printer really.
If you have an Android phone I can recommend a Chromebook but get a decent one.
If you have an iPhone, get an iPad.

I don't own one, but an elderly family member does and I have used it.

Depending what you require it can be an excellent choice. They use it for emails, browsing, news, weather etc. Perfectly fine for that, would be the same for online shopping, and using google docs you can do word processing, simple spreadsheets etc.

It boots up very fast, maybe 10 seconds or so and it's ready to use. Think of it like a cheap, large screen tablet with a proper keyboard and touchpad but it's just like a laptop to use, not like the annoying android version of chrome browser etc which I hate using.

Had a look at them today, I like the idea of a Linux based OS, my PC runs on Linux Mint and it is like supersonic for updates compared to the by-plane W10 laptop. But streaming apps like Rakuten will not run on Linux yet, I don't know about google chrome OS; otherwise I would consider what K_E suggests and change to Linux for laptop..

Best to read up on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_GRUB
If there are updates involving kernel then usually they take their place after a re-boot but its seconds not minutes as with W10.

How do you get the red line quote text S-E ?

Red line? Sorry, not taking the P, I don't see a red line and don't know what a "red line" quote is.

See a vertical red line, had to take a snap shot and then attach to show it!
You and others manage it without quoting the whole entry, I'm just thick !

If you click/drag to highlight any text you get a pop-up box that asks if you want to "insert quote in quick reply box". Accept and then add your own comment under.
