DIY Countertop basin, what protective paint and brackets do you recommend?

Post by adelast »

Hi everyone,

In my bathroom renovation I am planning to install a countertop basin, I am planning to either buy this or this but I have few questions:

1. I will need to cut the board to the right size and I am looking for a clear water resistant paint that will guarantee me that the wood won't bend or twist after cutting and that it won't be damage in case some water will be spilled on it. Also since we are talking of a bathroom, steam and vapour will be there daily, what product do you recommend for this?

2. I am looking for strong brackets that I can fix in the brick wall and that will hold this board, unfortunately the ones I am finding for sale are shaped as a triangle while I am looking for something strong but flat(so that it can't be seen easily) and that I can fix prior tiling, any recommendation?

Many thanks!

I doubt if there's anything to put on wood to prevent problems in that situation, oiling or waxing every day might solve it: but who's going to keep up that regime?

A bullet proof alternative is something like Trespa, but 99% of the time an ordinary laminate top will be fine.

Brackets: look for "Strongbeam" brackets.
One day it will all be firewood.

I wouldn't use wood in a bathroom to be honest.

Thank you both for your replies!
The reason why I need to use wood is not only aesthetic, but also because I need to shape the shelf so that is rounded on one side (the WC will be very very close to it and I don't want to have a sharp edge there).
So you think that this can't be done? Not even with some epoxy resin or something similar?
