Bubbles in plaster

Hi everyone, plastered a staircase, hall and landing today and on about 50% of the walls the first coat the plaster started to bubble. I managed to flatten them but just wondered what caused it.

Just out of interested, did you apply a PVA mix before plastering?

Bit of a strange one, would love to know what caused it too. I'd imagine everything was clean, bucket, trowels, etc..
