Hi All,
I have a small area - around 3m x 1m - which I want to tile. The rest of the room will be grey laminate flooring, and so the the 3m length on the tiled area will butt up against the laminate flooring. The floors are currently level with each other.
This is my plan, can you please critique it or offer better suggestions:
1. the substrate of the tiled area is sand/cement screed, about 15 years old. I will prime with Sikabond SBR+ and then tile onto that, using flexible adhesive (powder, not ready mixed). The laminate flooring is 14mm thick including underlay, so my tiles + adhesive will need to finish at the same level, 14mm thick in total. Any concerns with this approach?
2. There is a small area in the corner where there is no sand/cement screed, as an access area to some pipes. I was going to use some Aluminium sheet (~3 or 4mm thick) as a tray and stick the tiles onto this using silicone adhesive, grouting as normal. Is this a good approach, or should I use the same tile adhesive as the rest of the floor?
3. The transition between the tiles and the floor: I've thought hard about this, and I'm reluctant to use a T bar because I don't want it to stand out. I was thinking of using this straight edge tile trim, about 3mm from the laminate flooring and then using a grey silicone between the laminate and edging, for expansion. Is this a good idea? what other discreate transition options are there?
Finally, I'm a competent DIYer, but new to floor tiling. Any advice on what levelling system/tools I should buy? meaning, those spacers that help make the tiles level with each other.
THANKS!
Sammy
