Tools to give sealant a good finish

Post by geralds »

Anybody recommend a good tool to give sealant a good finish, and how to achieve a consistent finish as I have a large bathroom to do.

Cannot recommend any particular tool, as I've never used one - after forty years of trying, I can get a good finish without.

But if you search google, amazon, screwfix, toolstation, wickes for sealant finishing, caulk finishing, sealant smoothing and similar tools you will find HUNDREDS of versions, all much of a muchness. The Vitrex one looks good.

The trick I use, with an old credit card cut to the shape I want (or most often simply my finger), is a spray mister bottle filled with a weak solution of detergent & water. Mist copiously and smooth to shape.

I detest the job, never look forward to doing it, but once I get going I rarely fail. Also, I use good quality sealant, usually hybrid, such as Soudal Fixall for instance.

No doubt there'll be alternative views put forwards.

Above are my opinions Below is my signature.

Would you hit a nail with a shoe because you don't have a hammer? of course not, then why work on anything electrical without a means of testing Click Here to buy a "tester" just because it works, does NOT mean it is safe.

I've bought the long handled style of smoother in the past and didn't get on with it.
I agree the Cramer Fugi is the best tool out there.

fugi kit for me.

or spray bottle and your finger. spray your fingers with the water also.. basically anywhere you dont want the sealant to go

dont cut the nozzle at an angle cut it straight. say if you are sealing a vertical corner on a tiled wall so both surfaces are tiled.... keep the gun level and bang int eh middle so at 45 degrees. take a steady pace and dont put too much on. try not to stop and start again
